There are TWO kinds of threads

Conduit and conduit fittings use two forms of pipe threads. Conduit and female threaded conduit fittings use tapered pipe threads, the same as water pipe. With pipe tape and wrench tight connections they can form watertight joints.

Conduit fittings with male threads use straight (untapered) pipe threads. These do not form watertight joints. The male fitting threads are designed for use penetrating a box knockout and being fastened with a lock nut.

The UL specifications and testing do not investigate the mixing of tapered and untapered threads.

Therefore a male threaded to PVC female adapter screwed into a female hub is not a listed combination.

The listed way to accomplish that is to use a female hub, a short piece of RMC/IMC and a female thread to female PVC adapter.

UL White Book 2012:

CONDUIT FITTINGS (DWTT)
USE

....
All male threaded fittings and nipples have only been investigated for use with locknuts.
Fittings with internal female threads (e.g., hubs, conduit bodies, couplings) have only been investigated for use with threaded rigid conduit.

Would this be a bad place to ask if they make a PVC "close nipple"? If so, I apologize. I figured it could fit into the PVC adapters thread instead of making a new thread :D

I need to connect an ATS to a meter can but I have to fit the ATS into a tight space and it has to be about 3/4"-1" away from the meter can no further. I would like to nipple over in PVC to avoid bonding the nipple.

Not exactly, standard threaded conduit couplings are straight threads so they do not form water tight connections between sticks of conduit.

They make running thread pvc, we have a 3' long piece of 2" in the shop.

I've always wanted to try chucking a piece up in the threader and making my own, but I've never got around to it.....:D

We use them all the time and never had a problem. AHJ have never had a problem with them. I use the female when I transition from PVC to flex coming in from outside to inside, in my services changes.

A connector used to transition from plain end PVC conduit to a threaded metal or PVC female bell. Can also be used to connect PVC conduit to a box or other threaded body with the use of a lock nut.
The fitting consists of one solvent weld female end and one threaded male end. Both ends will fit the same diameter conduit.
