PVC In Ground

Curious about this assembly in my database. Questions:

1. Theres a PVC elbow so why would you need a male adapter. Wouldn't that only be used when transitioning to a threaded coupling like RGS?
2. Why the locknut.
3. Coupling is in the instance you have to cut the pvc at the point of the elbow I would assume

Is it assuming the PVC is landing to something?

What would the elbow have to do with whether or not it needed a male adapter?

Ah, that make sense regarding the adapter and locknut...just rarely do we ever land PVC in an enclosure and when we do it's an underground box and we use an end bell. Thanks.
