PVC question

No, not by hand. We used hammers and chisels once we realized just prying on the joint with a screwdriver wouldn't get it. For all practical purposes, the two pieces had become one.

well, in welding we think a weld is just one piece of fused metal, until we pull and twist the right way. then we see why pulsed TIG with a argon/helium mix makes a better weld.

hammer and chisel is not a method for testing the strength of a PVC joint.

FWIW, I wouldn't say that data supports the unqualified statement that "Unprimed joints are stronger than primed joints".

Rather I would summarize the data as "Primed joints take longer to cure than unprimed joints" or "primed joints are weaker than unprimed joints for the first 24 hours".

Cheers, Wayne

if you dont use primer just right then i can bet ya the unprimed joint will still be stronger after both cure for 30days.

out in the field, primer is often not used correctly.

In the plumbing world of cementing pvc together,
beginning in the `15 I-Codes, Purple Primer is no
longer required [ RE: `15 IPC, Section 705.11.2 ].

IMO, the best type of welded joint on pvc piping is
to clean the pipe & fittings with sand paper, and
wipe off before cementing.......I have never had
any leaks, ...plus no extra cost of buying a primer
or cleaner.

Also, in the area of plumbing pvc piping, the primer
was \ is used to [ potentially ] identify any joints
that have not been glued before the water test.
From an Inspector's viewpoint, seeing the purple
primer on the joints is one way to add credibility
to the persons installing the piping, and to speed up
an inspection.

Oatey now makes a product called "Fusion", a one step primer/cement for plumbing applications. So clearly even the manufacturers know there is some validity to the concept of not requiring a primer step if they are making a one-step product. I'm sure they have tweaked the solvent levels of the Fusion product slightly, but I can still see the arguments away from requiring primer only getting stronger now.
