Are there any issues running PVC from a RTU through the roof to a box and then change to EMT and run back to the panel. The space above the ceiling is not a plenum.

The issues that come to mind right away are making sure you pull a ground, since the raceway will not be metallic from point to point, and the correct use of fittings to change from one raceway type to another.

I would also check w/ the roofing contractor if they would allow PVC up through their witches hat, in tyhis area most of them require metallic conduit, either EMT or GRC. IMHO

Why is that? Do they also prohibit the plumber from using PVC vents?

Don in MA there are stricter plumbing codes as lowryder88h pointed out.

However even when I work in RI where plastic plumbing is allowed it will not be used through the witches hat for rubber roofing. (Commercial Jobs)

I believe it has to do with the longevity of the warranty of the roofing product.

Do they only call it a witches hat in Massachusetts?

I never heard of Witches Hat, but Pitch Pocket.

Tom here you would be taking about two different things.

Here a pitch pocket is usually a sheet metal circle or square that we bring pipes (sometimes many) up through and than it is filled with roofing tar. This is used with Hot mop roof jobs.

On rubber roof jobs they use a rubber gizmo that looks like a witches hat. It is cemented to the rubber roof and a spiral clamp (hose clamp) closes off the top end against one single pipe.

I gotcha, I always called that a boot, but it does look more like a hat, more likely named for some famous people from Salem!

BTW, I'm in MA as well.

It is common around here. A quick look at the installation instructions from [SIZE=-1]Carlisle and Firestone, the two major manufactures of rubber roof products, shows no restriction as to the type of pipe that can be used with thier pipe flashings, of course this was a very quick look and that restriction could be burried somewhere.

Thaks for all the info on the roofing materials, that is not the problem. Are there any violations with running PVC in a suspended ceiling. According to the code you can. Am I correct?

I personally don't know of any pvc rated for plenum usage, and if the space above the dropped ceiling is a return for the HVAC system, then you definately could not use PVC in this space. Other than that I'm still not sure.
