PVC Weather Head on RMC

Around here I see a similar situation. Underground service riser at pole will have first 10' in RMC then two or three sticks of PVC continuing up the pole.

No female adapter either, POCO just slides the bell end of the PVC over the end of the RMC. This is when no standoffs are being used, pipe mounted directly to pole. I always scratched my head on that one.

Isn't this sort the same as sticking a PVC weatherhead on RMC?

A utility pole is under the exclusive control of the utility and is not subject to the rules of the NEC.

Also, I'll bet where the poco requires RMC for the first 10', they also require it to be bonded. Around here they have us put a large water pipe clamp on the RMC, and they attach their "down ground" to it, usually a solid #8 or #6 I think. Of course, with the fault current that is available with service conductors, I don't see how that small bond to the RMC is going to do much good.

I agree, the general public couldn't care less what electrical stuff looks like.

I point out stuff all the time from some horrific stuff I saw in China to off level EMT and my wife and kids tell me to GET SERIOUS pleazeeeeeeeeeee.

My wife and I disagreed on the roofing product to put on our house slate, sheet metal, ETC.... In the end I noted we live in the middle of a forest no one will ever see or notice. We saved money and settled on a 30 year shingle.

I'd always seen risers done in rigid too. That was one of the first things I noticed after coming here (Nova Scotia) is that they do risers, weatherheads and all in PVC. Interesting thread.:D

Many American utilities use all PVC as well. In my observations PVC is far more common than RMC for pole risers.

Here we have to use "U" guard PVC for the first 10' of riser up the pole. The POCO runs the other 25' of U guard. Last year I used #80 PVC for the first 10' and the POCO violated it. Their reason is when a pole gets wiped out, it is easier the change the U guard that fighting with PVC

In WA I see PVC risers all the time as well but NY would have much more people and traffic I'm sure their POCO have included a code of 10' of RMC for the first 10' for a good reason. In my opinion for any state I think they should all adapt the 10' RMC for first 10' From grade if its in any direct direction to where a car could bump into it. I've seen a lot of broken Risers here in WA that look like they were just caused by someone backing up there car and not looking.

Yes and again once the painter sprays that riser mast and weather head who is going to say, "wow that grey PVC weather head looks like crap on that silver galvanized stick of RMC, what was that electrician thinking" ?

Come on down...to NY, at least lower NY.
The POCO requires RMC for the first 10 feet from grade.

You're in Con Ed territory, right?

I just travelled 3000 miles (round trip) on my trip down to Florida...NC, SC, VA, GA, Delmarva peninsula, etc. Of course I was looking at poco installations the whole time. The vast majority of the utility work that I observed used PVC or non-metallic U channel. Very little RMC at all.

use pvc

use pvc

We use pvc weather heads all the time. I only wish they used them more in the late 70's when my house was built, then I wouldnt have a rotting weatherhead right now. The thing being held together by white oxidized powder!!

Without reading all the posts in this thread, I'm gonna throw this out, from Arlington's web site:

Of course I'm going to paint it..... Bright Aluminum:smile:

It's got to look good (to me anyway) if I do it.

Thanks for all the response
