My theory is that the current will leak into the wood (like a resistor) producing no arc signature until the wood turns to charcoal over months even years.

I am not a fan of the AFCI, but in no way, do I think there was any type of bribery or collusion in the adoption of the AFCI rules.

I think a lot of people were mislead.
But anyway, if I take 120 volts to wood, would the wood not act like a resistor boiling out the water over time?

I set my insulation tester at 100 volts and connected the leads to the brass screws that hold my deck boards to the joists below. With the deck "dry" I had 3.4 meg-ohms. After I soaked it for a bit with a hose, I had 0.24 meg-ohms. The connection points were about 5' apart on the same 2x6 pressure treated deck board. The deck was about 20 years old at the time, so not sure how much of the pressure treatment chemical was still in the wood.

Still enough to pass a few micro amps. Obviously nothing would happen in the short run but the long run is a gamble.
