Going thru some code questions and came up with one that I cannot fiqure out. An electric mixer intended for traveling in and out of an open mixing tank shall be considered ______ utilization equipment. Fixed, Stationary, Portable, or Mobile. Thanks

I am at a loss on this one. Why is this a "code question"? I mean, what code requirement would be different for a fixed or a stationary or whatever? Does the branch circuit conductor size change for one versus another? How did you come across this question?

By the way, welcome to the forum.

What answer did you come up with?

Oh yea, welcome to the forum!

It is a Code question, charlie. It is in the NEC....

It was a question on a master open book practice exam. Found something in 501.140 (A) 4 but doesn't say what kind of equipment.

I see three of those four terms defined in articles 550.2 and 551.2. But how many mobile homes and RVs have mixing tanks? So I'm still at a loss.

Thats all the question asks thats why I'm confused.

OK, we're a bit leary here about just answering what appears to be 'homework' questions, so just bear with us. SInce you're new here, the assumption by many is you're just doing your homework. If this assumption is wrong, we apologize.

Don't get me wrong, we want to help you. But if this is a test question, you'll need to learn how to look it up yourself because we won't be here come test time. Hope you understand.

That said, let me ask you this... where do you think the answer should be? Also, what edition (02, 05 or 08) are you working from?

It is a code question for my students. I am doing the worksheet along with my students cause I don't have the answer key with me. I thought it should be in the 500 section but it doesn't really answer the question. The sections you gave give the definitions under mobile homes and trailers but isn't specific about electric mixers.

You're correct in Chapter 5. Truth is, I'm having a hard time finding a way to locate the correct answer by using the index. So far, I haven't found anything that lists the correct Code reference.

They have done a lot of work on this section,... it was dropped for the 05

2002 NEC 501.11 (5)

...........Electric mixers intended for travel into and out of open-type mixing
tanks or vats shall be considered portable utilization equipment.
FPN: See Section 501-13 for flexible cords exposed to liquids having a
deleterious effect on the conductor insulation.

I used Tom Henry's key word index and looked up electric mixer and found that section 501.140 A 4 but it just tells the use of a flexible cord. It doesn't say anything about what kind of equipment.
