Question on Service Relocation

I bought a house and had it totally rebuilt. I am going to remove the service and install a new one on the other side of the house. There are existing overhead wires already hooked up but they will not reach to the other side of the house. It looks like the utility will have to tap off of another pole on the other side of the house.

How do I go about getting them to do this? Is this something the inspector takes care of like when you need a fire underwriters certificate on a new house? Or do i have to talk to the utility because it is an existing house? Will they do it for free?

You need to get the podco engineer out there and look at the situation. I am sure they will need to engineer the project and charge you money as well.

My answers:
1. First, contact the service connections division of the serving electric utility.

2. Your electrician (assuming you do not normally run residential jobs) will be aware of the procedures for pulling the permit and getting the necessary inspections done.

3. See the answer to 1.

4. Maybe. It is up to the serving electric utility and the public service commission that governs their billing practices. We will not charge if there is existing secondary on the pole we are moving the service drop to. If we have to do more than that, there will probably be a charge and the service connection supervisor will contact the engineer in the area to work with you, determine what you need, maybe make some suggestions that will make life easier for you and his construction people, and to write a work order after the he (the engineer) collects the fee for the work involved.
