Im sorry if this isnt the right forum to post this in... I sent im my paperwork for my licence and it got returned to me. They said I didnt have enough hours for my licence. When I called they told me they only have the hours from my current company on record. I went to a tech school and they didnt have those hours on file. Do school hours not count? Or possibly they just missed it on my app.? I live in Mass. Thanks

Each state has their own licensing requirements. I would check their website or call them.

Here is a link to the requirements of each state.....for example in VA the requirements are different than in other states. Give this link a look see. Here is VA's for a journeyman...

Experience in excess of four years may be substituted for formal vocational training at a ratio of one year of experience for 80 hours of formal training, but not to exceed 200 hours; An associate degree or a certificate of completion from at least a two-year program in a tradesman related field from an accredited community college or technical school as evidenced by a transcript from the educational institution and two years of practical experience in the trade for which licensure is desired; A bachelor's degree received from an accredited college or university in an engineering curriculum related to the trade and one year of practical experience ; or On or after July 1, 1995, an applicant with ten years of practical experience in the trade as verified by reference letters of experience from any of the following: building officials, building inspectors, current or former employers, contractors, engineers, architects or current or past clients, attesting to the applicant?s work in the trade, may be granted permission to sit for the journeyman?s level

Classroom hours and OJT hours are not usually counted concurrently. Most states/localities will require a certain number of combination hours or one or the other.

Quoted from CMR13.02(3): Vocational School Experience.

Applicants may receive credit for electrical shop experience toward the 8000 hour apprenticeship experience requirement and for electrical related instruction experience toward the 600 hour journeyman course requirement provided however, that such experience was obtained in a public vocational school program approved by the Department of Education under M.G.L. c. 74 or in a private occupational school program licensed by the Department of Education under M.G.L. c. 93 or in a college/university program approved by the Board.

So it will be worth your while to follow up on this.

You need to go to the Voc and get the Certificates from them and send them in with your application.

I did send in my paperwork from the tech school with all of my other paperwork, what I didnt understand was that They approved my class hours, which was on the same page as my shop hours from school. I always thought that the school hours counted, so i was confused when my paperwork was sent back. I called PSI and the girl emailed the lady who processes the apps. So im going to give them a call tomrorow and see whats going on, I think that they just missed it on my paperwork. thanks guys.

So, they didn't count your Shop time towards your working hours? I don't think that class time counts toward anything but the education portion.

right they counted my class time, and I thought shop time counted, thats what my teachers told me, and there was also a spot for it on the app. I checked on the mass board of electricians websight, this is the link to the form from the vocational school http://www.mass.gov/dpl/boards/el/forms/form222.pdf Im assuming that they missed it? I really hope so because if not im short about 6 months.

I talked to someone from PSI today (the testing company) and she told me to bad, theres nothing they can do. She said they dont count, but i just talked to someone who went to the same school as me and gradguated a year before me, his paperwork was approved, and he said with school he only had 8200 hours... Is there anyone on the board of electricians here that could possibly help me out? thanks.

gtm 87, please go back and read and copy my post #8. It comes straight from the Commonwealth of Mass. Regulations, 237 CMR 13.02(3). If you attended an approved school it seems that you should get credit for shop and academic related time. You may need to call the Board of Examiners to see where to start. I wish I could help you more.

.... lol yeah i think so... Im almost 21. I just got off the phone with PSI and they told me that he doesnt think that my hours count, they only count if its a college. He is going to look into it to check, it seems like a huge misunderstanding.

so i got a call from PSI today and they told me the state denied my app. I called the board and they said the only person who could tell me what the problem is or fix it is out he hurt his leg and shes not exactly sure when hes comming back. So i have no idea why they didnt except my time from high school.
