quick neutral wire question

hey guys, I'm out n a jobsite and need an aswer... trying to find it in the nec...

where(if) does it say that you have to use the white wire as the full time hot wire in a dead end 3 way or a 2 wire switchleg drop from a light with power in it? marking I black, of course. maybe im just crazy...
