Outside, excess methane burner. I just got a call to go estimate and purchase materials for a pole light, someone tripped last night because of lack of light. Has to be up today. They don't want an explosion proof light. What is the distance required from the burner?

If this is one of the ones they use like at gas stations, the classified area is pretty tight meaning you don't have to be very far away. I believe we have one where a panel is within 3ft or so of the burner.

You should be able to look at it and decide for yourself.

My other question would be, why is somebody walking around this thing at night?

It is a sewer plant. They have to check everything and verify its working, per EPA and DHEC. Well, I'm off to put up a pole, at least its a cool afternoon! I'll swing by and get my book. I need to get an extra so I don't leave it at home. Enjoy your afternoon while I dig a trench! :) Thanks anyway!

Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer.

I don't believe that these are mentioned specificaly in the NEC, so I require the engineer to classify the area.

Just got in, Tired as ...you know (100' trench with a shovel, no rain in weeks). I couldn't find it in the book either. The foreman at the plant said put it here, X marked the spot. It was 25' from the burner. I will look in the book some more when I get up in the morning. If I'm too close, I'll dig it back up in the morning. I didn't put in the cement, just in case. After all, he is the AHJ at this point! Good night, I know when I finish eating it will be shower, then bed!

seems like it would be a div 2 (if the burner malfunctioned, wouldn't the light be a possible ignition source ?)
