Your right, but the solder is a weak point in the bulb itself for a hole to open up...

Nope, the glass envelope is bonded to the wires. You could unsolder the wires, solder on NEW wires (heh), and use the bulb without the base.

The solder just attaches the base to the wires. It's not structural. The base is glued (or something) to the envelope and if that glue fails the base and envelope will separate, but the vacuum won't be broken.

Not long.

But putting a hole in the glass is much different than melting the solder on the screw shell.

The solder is not used to plug any holes in the glass.
 
yes I know, I think my point was an ARC is very hot and would indeed create a hole versus just melting some solder... ? I never should have worded it that way in my previous post... :)
