Does any body have any ideas or tricks that they use for raising metal remodel device boxes. The problem is that the back splash for the countertop is to high for the receptacle. My problem comes in if I raise it up the bottom flange has no sheet rock for support for the box, and was wondering if any body has any tricks they use.

Rip some small 1X1"X4" peices of wood and put them on the sides of the hole with some rock screws so they would be covered by the plate. (usually do it close to where the plaster ears on the box would be) Then screw the box to the two pices of wood through holes on the inside of the box. (If you have access to #4 or 6 finish head screws - they will protrude into the box less - as using say rock or deck screws the head will obstrruct some devices like dimmers and GFI's)

FYI you can do the same thing with a masonary box - they often have more room.

Does that work just as well with lath and plaster as sheet rock. It a lath and plaster wall.

I would say yes, but let me offer this: If you use this method I would pre-drill the wall making sure I was drilling through the lath. Then screw the blocks of wood to the wall and continue as stated above.

Is the back splash going to cover the lower portion of the hole when you raise the box?

Could you cut a piece of wood to go at the bottom of the opening extending up so the bottom ears would catch this wood block. The screws used to hold the block in place will be covered by the back-splash.

I hope this reads as I have it in my head.

I thought about this to but wouldnt the top and bottom be about a half inch difference because the top would be on the finished part and the bottom would be on the wood with no finished wall?

The ears on the metal box should be adjustable or take the ears off and turn them around so the ears are actually set back into the box.
