They have been banned in suffolk county forever. I cant tell you how many I have seen go in because there isnt exactly a garbage disposal swat team running around checking sinks. Really how enforseable is this new ban.

What you are saying makes sense, its just like is there going to be a light bulb police when and if the CFL issue takes effect. One of my points in my first post was creating a NEW market for the unlicensed handy man. Many threads have been started about unlicensed people doing work, taking work from legitimate elect. contractors and doing substandard and dangerous work. I am sure that MOST of the legitimate plumbing and elect. contractors will turn request down for replacements or new install, after the fact, because it will be something they could loose their licenses and/or face large fines for. (They will make an example of someone). But I can see the ad's on trucks now, Bob's Handyman Service- Yard work, Gutters cleaned, Electrical, Lawns mowed, Garbage disposals installed, Carpentry, Plumbing, Walk your dog... any thing for a buck. No Insurance, No licenses, No problem I'm that good

When prohibition went into effect, it gave rise to the mob. At least with disposals outlawed, the unlicensed handyman installing them can't be accused of taking away legitimate contractor's work.

Thats a good point.

i will be running stealth garbage disposal supply runs to Raleigh...meet me in the alley behind the old school...tuesday at midnite...i'll have batch feed, switched, up to 3/4 hp....place your orders...

Maybe something to it.

220, You're a mess! You sure you're not a plumber?

I do more than my share. The last house I remodeled I had to replace ALL of the old cast iron sewer pipe in the WHOLE house and relocate a bunch of copper. Thankfully the 4" clay was good outside.

It's the same as electrical. It goes in one end and comes out the other.

The reasoning for this seemed to be more for some wacked green idealogy than for water conservation - and a half baked idea that grease will plug up the whole city...
  • If water is the issue why not ban the dishwasher - or dishes.... People use the GD while washing dishes for a moment or two at the middle or end of washing a load - no extra water is used to do it IMO. "Mayor Charles Meeker said disposals also waste about 500,000 gallons of water a day citywide." Where did he get this figure???? A city of 276093 putting 1.81 gallons of water through the disposal per person, per day for the tops 30 seconds they might use it over two days.... Often while rinsing the sink - which they will do anyway....
  • If these people think that grease is going to stop up a 24" sewer line, they are mistaken - it will jamb your own line first, and that is the property owners problem. Not even going to get into what can get flushed down a toilet in an average month that can be far worse than what made it though a kitchen sink disposal....

disposals and composts

disposals and composts

does Raleigh and environs rely on GDs for organic disposal? Would not the city be responsible for providing alt methods of organic collection -- "recycle" bins -- and removal of such?

Not everyone can manage a compose pile ... and their fumes.

My family is from Avon Ma. When I was a kid a farmer (?) use to come by and pick up the organic stuff for the pigs I assume. Now like everything else we put in our bodies (and soon our cars) they are corn fed.

I wonder how they plan on addressing dishwashers with garbage disposal built into them (like ours).

Rather than outlawing them altogether they should make owners register them with the municipality after taking a required training course and issuing a special permit to conceal them in dishwashers.

There should also be a law passed against transporting them while connected to an electrical outlet. Also, during transport the cord should be required to be disconnected from the unit and carried in an approved case out of reach from the driver.

I will play the devils advocate II

The Army Corp of Engineers, stop letting out so much water out !

The water level is up to 75% of what it was + - and there talking about let people water there lawns again. No I didn't read the article I live it, and hear it everyday.

One town is offering 500.00 to swap the homeowners lawn grass, their phones are ringing off the hook its just "wakie" oh wait thats WAKE County.

I hope they don't move up here. The sewer system has suffered blockages from kids installing basketballs into the pipes.

Maybe we should ban basketballs. Darn what would everyone watch in March? What would Dick Vital do?
