ok, i have an existing circuit for the range, the house is about 20 years old...they ran a 6-2 w/ uninsulated ground copper nm-b circuit....i installed a 3 prong recept. and hooked it up...what would you guys have done in this situation?...it's a two story house and to run a new circuit would be costly, or am i worrying about nothing?

The problem is that NM wouldn't have been allowed for this 20 years ago, (SE would have been) so I probably would have told the HO it would need a new circuit.

why wouldn't nb be allowed for this 20 years ago?( i could be wrong on how old the hose is, but im guessing)....ok, i guess my question is if i leave it like it is, what would be the side effects?

nevermind, i just got the code book out...you're right it is permitted to be uninsulated if it is in se cable....but it is run in nm-b!....how did this pass inspection....i guess i'll tell him the bad news....thanks for the input roger(i was just being lazy)

You're welcome.

I would have used it.

I inform the HO in writing that it is a code violation.

I would tell him off the record that I personally consider it a technical violation.

IMHO, bare conductor in SE = bare conductor in NM.

i did use it....and i did tell him it's a code violation...it's kinda one of those friend deals, so it's not like i'd charge that much to fix it anyway...i just want to sleep at night

as a point of conversation, my old brain doesn't work too well at times, but if the install is actually 20 yrs old, I don't think it would be NM-B.

also, opinion: friend vs no friend, sleep vs no sleep, charge vs no charge, if you install it and it is not Code compliant, the liability rest on your shoulders.
