Even for aluminum?
I believe so. It's the 40A in the calculation.

For copper it'd be:

((240V?55A?1000)-8kW)/(5%?8kW)+12kW = 25kW

I'm open to correction. These are my first instances of reverse calculating from wire size and type to kW rating.

A 16 kw range would be calculated to be 12kw or am I talking out my -- you know what-- again. 12000/240= 50 amps.

Now this is resi work so I will guess the man is using copper as I have not seen 6/3 aluminum but if it were aluminum then it would be ser cable , I presume and that would only be rated 40 amps.

A 16kW range would be calculated to present a maximum demand load per Note 1, i.e. 8kW is increased by 5% of 8kW per kW over 12kW

16kW - 12kW = 4kW
5% of 8kW = 400W
4?400W?1000 = 1.6kW
8kw+1.6kW = 9.6kW
9.6kW?240V = 40A

You nailed it. Both times.

well that's fine but if you think like I do ( I am glad you don't) you screw everything up. :) For some reason I used 16 kw- 8 kw and got 8 kw instead of 16- 12 and getting 4kw.

From there I screwed up even further by using 50% instead of 5%. .5 vs .05

As usual you are correct. I am having a bad week-- I'll blame the drugs.
