Since tortuga posted the question for feedback the correct answer is that there is no correct answer based on the exact wording of the question. Another answer choice say E) None of the above would take care of that. Since this is "some range quiz questions to add to a class" the question or answers should be fixed to represent a question that can be correctly answered given the answer choices.
I seriously thought it was just an oversight

In a quiz question, precise wording is called for.

I don't like the 'non-NMB cable size' wording, whether there's a typo or not. I would say something like 'what is the correct conductor size if using NMB cable?' Using NMB is a good choice because that's the only wiring method that trumps thorny questions about how to apply 110.14(C) or derating for more than 3 cccs.

Also I would use e.g. '8 AWG' in the answers instead of the shorthand #8.

Also not sure you should be teaching people to install 50A receptacles on 40A cable (breaker size unknown). Might be to code but not best practice. (What if someone changes the range.) Might be good to specify the breaker or add 'required minimum' to the conductor size.

If you're running a 40 amp branch circuit you don't have any choice but to use a 50 amp receptacle unless it's hardwired.

Thanks for the feedback all, the 'non' is a type'o and should not have been in there. 🙃

I like that thanks.
