Rant about 2x4 lay in fixtures....

So why is it that no-one has decided to start marketing 47" lamps and matching fixtures, or better yet adapters for current fixtures?

Design an adapter that makes a 48" bulb.... er, lamp, into a 47"....

Only works on older models..

Only works on older models..

For those who don't know this.. there is a "dimple" on the metal edge of the socket. The older sockets have a slit in them where the pins slide in. The dimple tells you that the lamp it seated properly in the socket.

I don't have any words of wit at the moment, but I do have one observation. I just sent an RFQ for some ballasts for a T8 retrofit, and on a whim, I had them quote the whole fixture. The whole fixture is coming in at about 20 bucks cheaper than ballasts and ballast labor. In this case, the fixtures were 2x4, 18 cell parabolic, T8, 3 lamp, 2 circuit (2 and 1), 120V. Methinks I'm going with new fixtures on this job's quote. That might make me stand out if there's more than just me bidding it.

I just finished installing 180 fluorescent tubes today if you were wondering why the rant....

In my first year I was on a punch out crew ballast and tubes 8 hours a day. I thought if this is electrical work is about I am quitting, then I got transferred to a high rise deck in rainy November and coldest January in years, those tubes seemed like pretty good work then.

the fixtures I was working on today were old 4 lamp t-12s, I just did a couple jobs recently installing 3 lamp t-8s the differnce in brightness between 3 and 4 lamp fixtures is negligible...

I remember you telling me that a few months ago, and I thought you were nuts. I did a few after that with that 4-lamp to 3-lamp kit that you Tek screw in the fixture, and it was pretty nice. You could hardly tell, and the people were satisfied, so I have to eat my hat on that one. If I had it to do over, and I was faced with ordinary 2x4's, I might have just went with new fixtures. I can get a new, ordinary 3-lamp fixture with one ballast and the typical prismatic refractor for around 40 bucks.

I was talking to a lighting specialist a while back, they explained that the additional "lamps" actually blocked the reflected light that is bouncing around in the fixture, so you wind up with as much or possibly more light from a three lamp fixture....

I've got it!!!

All we need is telescopic tubes! You push the ends together like a toilet-paper spindle, put the tube in place, and the ends spring out into the sockets.

How's that?

Apparently, I do, too. ;)

Sounds like a reversed slimline

Why should WE be the ones who have to change? Why can't the ceiling grid industry make their openings 25x49? Lektickerty's been around longer than them ugly ceilings have.

I want to thank you guys. Every night you teach or remind me of something and you always give me a good laugh.

And I heard one lamp puts out more light than 3 or 4! LOL! Pins scraping on the end? Push harder! No wonder those ballasts go bad : )
