Ratted someone out today...

Exceptionally long story short - I get this call the other day from a GC, who reffered me to where I was working..... "Hey Mark - I'm over at (Blah Blah), the owners a friend of mine, and he had this guy blkow up a whole bunch of...." ME: "WAIT -You're where!?!?!" And then I told him all about it.... So my first face to face contact with my new customer was telling him....

Rewards for ratting someone out?

By having the inspector take care of it, its now the AHJ who is the bad guy (not really).
And thank you for doing this. This electrician was making us all look bad.

Don't let his karma, be your dogma. You did the right thing by possibly saving several buildings and possibly dwellings from being threatened by an idiot.

Think of it this way -

Would you let a (poor) mechanic put a wheel on your car with just two lugs? Only to have it come off going eighty on the freeway? Of course not!

Your risk assessment was a fair call for keeping the industry in the hands of professionals.

Hmmm, I let the dealership change a wheel bearing, evidently only hand-tightening the lug nuts. Made a 100mi trip with speeds up to 80 mph, and was wondering why my truck was shuddering when i got off the highway. Found this

Wow Rick! Thankfully nothing happened to you physically. Did the dealership do anything to make it right (like pay to have it fixxed at a shop of your choice, of admit they subbed it out to joe's underground)?

They've been pretty good to me since with shop rates and scheduling. A few weeks back I blew a rear U-joint and they covered my tow, knocked half the list price off the parts, and got it repaired the day of (normally they book over a week in advance) Actually got the job done for less than than quoted at the last oilchange (I knew it had to be done, but procrastinated)

Fared better than a guy I saw with a truck similar to mine. Had brake work done at the muffler shop with the golden touch, didn't make it 6 blocks before his wheel fell off and rotor kissed asphalt.

Edited by Charlie to remove an inappropriate sentence.

How many "Hail Mary's" do I owe?
That depends on how good their coffee is.

Seriously, you did the right thing. I would like to think I would have done the same thing, and I'm not an electrician! Any time you see someone doing something that is unsafe and potentially deadly, you have every right, and almost an obligation to report them to someone, even if it's only the owner.

Good job

Good job

I learned a long time ago to check the voltage at the breaker before energizing the circuit. Consequently I've worked with a lot of high-legs over the years and never damaged anything (though I can tell some stories of others who have).
You definitely did the right thing. If you hadn't called the inspector you may have had to call the fire dept.
