Welcome to this topic series. We want to encourage anyone planning to make a formal action for the current NEC cycle to post it here. This includes Proposals, Comments, possible Tentative Interim Amendments (TIA), requests for Formal Interpretations (FI), Appeals to the Standards Council, etc.
Posting here will hopefully get a full range of practical comments supporting, opposing or clarifying your proposed formal action. Ultimately it should help make a stronger proposed action.
For this forum the capitalized terms Public Input (formerly "Proposals") and Comment mean formal actions you intend to submit directly to the NFPA and will ultimately be documented in a formal NFPA Record of Proposals (ROP) or Record of Comments (ROC).
Finding the proper forms is fairly simple. The NFPA has provided all that is needed on this web page. You will also find it useful to review both the NFPA and NEC Manuals of Style.
We intend to deal only with posts where the OP indicates an intention to make a formal action within the current NEC cycle deadlines. We will post the current deadline in a separate Sticky at the beginning of the forum. After the deadline passes we will lock all earlier threads. We will also lock any thread that has missed a deadline or is simply off topic. Threads that would have otherwise been appropriate in another forum will be moved to that forum.
We do not intend to deal with complaints, suggestions, philosophy or similar issues since the forum has no authority to do anything about them. (We are not the Standards Council.) However, if you wish to make a formal Appeal to the NFPA Standards Council, we will help as much as we are able. In this case, Appeal is a general term within NFPA Bylaws that refers to requesting the Standards Council to take action on an issue.
We also do not intend to make formal actions on behalf of anyone.
For basic activities in this forum (Public Input/Comments), use the following simplified format for each new topic item introduced:
PUBLIC INPUT
1.) NEC Section/Paragraph: [Please include this in the TITLE of the thread also. Include a short description, if you like]
2.) Public Input/Comment Recommends: [new text/revised text/deleted text (pick one)]
3.) Public Input/Comment: [Include old text, if applicable, and then proposed new or revised wording]
4.) Substantiation: [State the problem that will be resolved by your recommendation. (Why is it a problem? How will your proposal solve it?) Be as specific as possible.]
COMMENTS
1.) Comment on Proposal No.:
2.) Recommendation:
3.) Substantiation:
For those responding, if you recognize a coordination issue, please raise that as well as any other comments you may have.
Edits:
Rev 1. Added "[Please include this in the TITLE of the thread also. Include a short description, if you like]" to the simplified format Section 1.[03-17-2008 at 09:49 AM.]
Rev 2. Emphasized the forum will not make formal actions on behalf of posters.[06-17-2008 at 06:53 AM.]
Rev 3. Revised Proposals to Public Input. Updated weblink to forms.[07-23-2013 at 12:46 PM.]
Rev 4. Updated weblink to forms.[08-30-2017 at 12:46 PM.]
