Has any one heard of a recall on "Square D" arc-fault breakers Manufactured before Sept. 2, 2004?

Thanks for your time

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

Yes, there is a recall on certain date codes. I called Square D's hot line and verified this. Square D is sending a list of numbers to the distributors. Thanks for the information.

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

Could you tell me what the hot line number is for "Square D" so I can get the list of numbers on their recall.

Thank you for your time

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

While they said that it is being mailed out to the distributors, their # is 1-888-778-2733.

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

The date code span I have seen is for all QO, Homeline and QOB manufactured between March 1 and September 23, 2004.

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

Would new homes that have been finaled out need to be reinspected once the new AFI circuit breakers have been installed???

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

Thanks for all your help. I did a little research and found out that Square D will start shipping replacements to all of their distributors. As of September 29th they were still uncertain as to how they were going to address the installed breakers. As far as re-inspecting finaled houses, I am notifying all of my clients to get in touch with their electrical contractor to ensure their breakers are not on the recall list. I am also notifying all of the electrical contractors as well.

"Would new homes that have been finaled out need to be reinspected once the new AFI circuit breakers have been installed???"
That would depend on the local rules for when ckt breakers can be replaced without a permit. Thats not an NEC issue. However, an inspection, even if not required would create paper trail. Lawyers know about the AFCI issues....

Are there actually localities that require a permit to replace a failed CB? I have a hard time believing such a thing.

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

I was just going to post a thread asking if anyone else has been running into defective Arc-Fault Home line breakers!!! I had 4 defective ones in a row. But, you have already answered my question!
Thanks, I'll trade them in for new ones!

Dave

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

I just spoke to Square D. I was told the date code is located on the little white sticker just above the "Hot" terminal. There will be 2 letters stamped in RED ink. The defectice codes are CN

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

The defective codes are CN DN EN FN GN HN JN
If you have these codes on your breakers they ARE DEFECTIVE!

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

My question is this.who should pay for the labor to change these breakers out?We as E C`s install a listed item and to find out the manufacturer has defective breakers out there...Where does the liability lie..

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

Been thinking about this since last night.during march to september of this year we probably installed at least 3,000 + AFCI`S in homes here.
So who`s responsibility is it to find out which homes have these AFCI breakers in them.Us as the EC or the homeowner? The logistics to back track suppliers and shipments which are part of this recall is mindbogling.

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

Part of the overhead of doing business is dealing with this kind of problem.

As to who is at fault, at least a good chunk of the fault is those who pushed for making these things of dubious value required in the first place.

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

What is the actual problem with the breakers?

Roger

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

The problem I noticed right away was the TEST button would not trip the breaker. It is always the first thing I test when I test my houses. The breakers would allow power to the circuit and as far as I know would still provide Overcurrent protection but the Arc-Fault portion was not working, and sure enough they were ALL marked with the date code EN.

Dave. i do the same thing,Main on see what trips go through make a list and correct.pasy few moths have changed allot of breakers Now I Know why :D

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

As of today one of our bigger builders that spec SQ D panels, notified us that they have been informed that there is a recall or going to be issued a recall haven`t confirmed which yet and that they will pay us to go in occupied homes to inspect suspected malfunctioning afci`s.This being determined by trim dates and date codes. We estimate in this time frame we are looking at about 650 homes in this area.We bid 1 afci per bedroom but usually a 1950 sq` ft. 3 bedroom, has 2 afci`s in it. :D .We will get at least 650 trip charges and the labor to change out @ Breaker. So min.$65.00 x 650 + $15 @ x 2 min !!! WOW Thank you SQ D :D
