Wanted to know if anybody ever had a problem with IC rated cans in a garage with living space above(two-story) as far as the garage being fire-rated.
This is out of the Indiana IRC(b) Change the text of SECTION R309.2 to read as follows: The garage shall be separated from the residence and its attic area by a smoke separation of not less than one-half (?) inch (thirteen (13) millimeter) gypsum board applied to the garage side of the framing.
R309.2 Separation required. The garage shall be separated from the residence and its attic area by not less than 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) gypsum board applied to the garage side. Garages beneath habitable rooms shall be separated from all habitable rooms above by not less than 5/8-inch (15.9 mm) Type X gyp-sum board or equivalent. Where the separation is a floor-ceil-ing assembly, the structure supporting the separation shall also be protected by not less than 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) gypsum board or equivalent.
That sounds odd. If the fire requirements are met with drywall, a gasket on a can trim would seem superfluous. Have you been tagged for such a thing?Originally posted by gndrod:

now thats interesting. whats the cost difference between that and fire rated cans. last i checked fire rated 6" cans where like 150$ a piece.
