Re: reccesed cans in garage

Yes. The cans have to have a minimum 20 minute fire rating and be listed for the location because the building code requires 5/8 type X drywall in the ceiling of a garage when there is a habitable room above.

Re: reccesed cans in garage

your plans should have a detail showing the rating of that ceiling, you need recess housings that are rated to be in that ceiling

Re: reccesed cans in garage

I'm trying to find if ther is a rating on the cans I got Halo H7ICAT. But the pland don't show any lighting and the inspector just said it was fire rated. In commercial we box the fixtures with 5/8 sheet rock so I want to try that after talking to the inspector.

Re: reccesed cans in garage

Indiana dosn't have a fire wall requirment between a dwelling and a attached garage, Instead they call it a smoke separation wall.

(b) Change the text of SECTION R309.2 to read as follows: The garage shall be separated from the residence and its attic area by a smoke separation of not less than one-half (?) inch (thirteen (13) millimeter) gypsum board applied to the garage side of the framing.
This is out of the Indiana IRC

Re: reccesed cans in garage

Wayne,
Look farther and see if there is a section for "habitable room above" which is usually right after the section you quoted.

Ohio is the same as the IRC:
R309.2 Separation required. The garage shall be separated from the residence and its attic area by not less than 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) gypsum board applied to the garage side. Garages beneath habitable rooms shall be separated from all habitable rooms above by not less than 5/8-inch (15.9 mm) Type X gyp-sum board or equivalent. Where the separation is a floor-ceil-ing assembly, the structure supporting the separation shall also be protected by not less than 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) gypsum board or equivalent.

Re: reccesed cans in garage

Even though the NEC does not seem to address energy code concerns, has anyone been tagged on provisions where recessed electrical housings need airtite sealed lens covers in garage ceiling openings below habitable rooms?

Re: reccesed cans in garage

I'm sure you'll get a lot of opinions here but irrespective of what anyone says I would check with your local building dept. and fire inspector for their official interpretations. Here in NJ the fire officials are requiring double 5/8" sheetrock on the ceilings of garages with living space above. Any penetrations (other than for receptacles or keyless fixtures with properly rated backboxes) are not permitted whether there is living space above or not

That sounds odd. If the fire requirements are met with drywall, a gasket on a can trim would seem superfluous. Have you been tagged for such a thing?

As I understand it, WA has some serious energy codes. :)
