Receptacle in Step Riser?

I've never been asked to do this before so I've never thought about it...

Customer has a large area, one side is the dining room, the other is a living room. There is no wall between the 2 areas, just a "Step" down between the 2 areas. The step goes from wall to wall seperating the 2 areas. Customer wants a receptacle cut into the back of the step (Riser).

Is this permitted?

Sort of like a vertical floor box, huh? I can't think of anything that would not allow what you describe.
 
My concern was wether it would be a trip hazard. I don't think it would be any more of a trip hazard than a floor receptacle is!
 
I wonder if that were inspected today if it would count as wall space? I realize it isn't a wall, but I am picturing a sunken living room here with one side completely open

On the same token, does the landing of a staircase require a receptacle?

I think that situation would be looked at as a hallway and would fall under 210.52(H). I always include a receptacle in stairway landings regardless of size. It just seems like it's practical to me.
