I am in the process of building a new home and have a question. Is it allowed by code to put a receptacle outlet in a closet in a bedroom? I am asking because I wanted to run structured wiring into that closet,(CATV, CAT5 netwoking, phone etc.), and of course, this would require power to run certain electronics.

Thanks

Re: Receptacle outlets in closet

Probably........ However, I think it should meet this requirement;
2002 NEC 210.8 Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection for Personnel.
(A) Dwelling Units. All 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles installed in the locations specified in (1) through (8) shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel.
(1) Bathrooms

The answer about a receptacle in a closet is yes.

About an AFCI in a closet is interesting. A closet is not considered a habital room or space. Is it considered part of a bedroom? Therefore making it fall under the provision of 210.12, or does it not fall under that section rule.

Thanks guys,

Does it need to be AFCI or GFCI? Also, I wanted to put in a 4 plug recep, and this is a bedroom closet that will have clothes in it, would this be a problem? Just asking because have read some other posts about panels in closets. Also, I am located in Florida.

No, you can not put a panel in a closet. Yes you can put as many receptacles as you want/can afford in a closet. I also believe that it is not a bathroom, therefore, no GFCI. I also believe that it is not a sleeping room, therefore no AFCI.

I agree Ryan. Rcattell are you in South FL? If you are I don't know if there is any help for you. :D

You may be under the strange world of one of the Fl building codes. (6 receptacles per circuit for one example)

You can download these from the net. (at least I did)

There are areas of South FL that have much more stringent testing of lift station generators than hospitals do for their generators. This is do to what I call the Sardine Can issues. ;)

Good luck
Roger

I tried to download FL electrical codes and did not find them. They just kept refering to NEC. I am not in south FL, am in Tampa Bay area, so the crazy S FL rules should not apply.

Thanks for the help, Go BUCS

Ryan,

My bad on that one! I am seldom involved with residential and have not gotten used to the AFCI requirement.

What caught my attention was the nature of the question. I guessed that the submitter was a non-electrician and I wanted to at least recommend something that would afford some dereee of protection. Usually when questions of this nature are posed, the submitter is fishing and I am unsure of where the next response will go.

I wired an addition in NC recently, and put a recep in the master bed closet. The ahj asked if we had fed it from the bedroom afci ckt, which we had. He said he felt the closet was part of the bedroom.

I actually hadn't thought about it,it was just easier to feed it that way. I suspect it's a judgement call on the ahj's part.

Re: Receptacle outlets in closet

Since there seems to be some debate in this thread about AFCI'ing the closet receptacle, it makes me wonder about the closet light. Our inspectors here (Northern Ohio) demand that the bedroom closet light be on an AFCI circuit - so we put it on one. What about other states? Do they interpret the NEC the same way our inspectors do??

I am not sure how all the inspectors here view it, but I'm sure it is not fully consistent. I am always looking for uniformity issues to bring up in our state chapter IAEI board of directors meeting, I think I will bring this one up next Wednesday.

Re: Receptacle outlets in closet

George,

How do you interpret the code when it comes to the bedroom closet light?

1. If the closet light is on a pull chain.

2. If the light is switch operated and the switch is in the bedroom?

Speaking of pull-chain lampholders.

Where are they permitted?

Where are they prohibited?

Thanks,
