Can someone tell me if it is an NEC violation for my brother to have a receptacle over his electric stove. ( in the wall, 120v)

Re: Receptacle over stove

I have a small microwave on a shelf over my stove.

No cabinets. Just the shelf.

I have a receptacle below the shelf for the microwave.

I find that a good location, for my use, when I warm up my coffee.

My decorator looks at the receptacle as a blemish that is irritating.

My cleaner finds the irregularities to be dirt traps and hard to clean.

The Code has no restrictions on placing a receptacle "over a stove", as long as the wiring of it is done to "Code".

Re: Receptacle over stove

I've neve considered that location for a receptacle but it does raise some interesting questions. Why does the NEC allow a receptacle over a stove, with heating elements that can be red hot or actually fire, but does not allow receptacles over baseboard heaters?

I would like to ammend my original comment. There's nothing wrong with that location whatsoever. If people don't know better than to drape cords across a red hot heating element, or an open flame, then that's too bad for them.

My original response took too much consideration of our "blame society" and lack of personal responsibility. I apologize.

Re: Receptacle over stove

bt: receptacles over baseboard heaters will have unattended cords attached to them, in both summer and winter, long periods where a cord may escape notice or care. The stove may be used, but the cord will not be unattended for at least some portion of the heating, thus facilitating its removal or relocation.

Re: Receptacle over stove

There is no place in the NEC that says receptacles cannot be placed over electric baseboard heaters - I dare you to find it ;)

There are 2 locations in the NEC that say:
"FPN: Listed baseboard heaters include instructions that may not permit installation below receptacle outlets."

FPNs are not mandatory language. Last week I googled for this and found at least one manufacturer that does not say anything in their instructions about placing their units below receptacles. If you were to use their units, would you be able to install receptacles above their units????? I am not asking is it a good idea. I am not saying well that is not a good idea, just would it be permitted???? ;)

Re: Receptacle over stove

It is going to be used for plugging in a slow cooker. My sister-in-law likes to keep it on the stove, and with their late schedules, they use it alot. (pardon the spelling errors if any)

There is a reason I have this website link in my Favorites folder labeled, Education. I have been educated, Pierre. I did take your challenge and have discovered you are correct. I have been misleading myself. I'm thinking now that this is not an NEC issue but an application issue.

I still think it's a good idea to avoid these applications.

If spelling concerns you, then before you hit the "Add Reply" button, you can hit the "Spell Check" button two spots to its right. It's not a perfect spell checker, but it does catch some errors.

Re: Receptacle over stove

I don't think many jurisdictions will allow baseboard heaters under receptacles, even if not an NEC issue.

Re: Receptacle over stove

Thanks Bob. That is really the reason I come here. I have become much better at what I do because of the people at this site - yet such a long way to still go....

Like I said, I do not think it is a good idea to install a receptacle above an electric baseboard heater, but we still need to know what is what.

BTW - this is a good one to win a lunch bet over ;)
