What would a special purpose receptacle be considered? See attached.
THey are trying to pin us down on a job we have that this applies to all receptacles.

Could mean almost anything.

It says "special purpose", which I would take to mean any receptacle intended for any specific load, and not just a general use receptacle.

Is there a definition of 'special purpose receptacle' in the plans or bid document? If so than the definition that you agreed to would apply.

If not I would go with a common sense understanding such as post 2 or 4.

IMHO 'tamperproof' is not special purpose, given that tamperproof is required for standard residential 120V general purpose receptacles.

Not right or wrong, but I have the other take on this. Especially since they are asking for voltage, amperage and circuit not what gets plugged in. If it isn't a 5-15 or a 5-20 receptacle, I would engrave a plate.

They said "special use", but just thinking about "why" they would want engraved plates, and I'm thinking they probably meant "specific use".

For example, just assume it's something like a restaurant. They probably want something so everyone knows "Coffee Pot goes here on a dedicated circuit, soda and ice maker go here, 2 heat lamps go in this duplex....."

If you didn't ask for clarification before bidding the project, you may be in for a disagreement with the designers.

Which is why I was saying "not right or wrong" I was thinking they want to be easily able to ID the voltage phase and amperage when it isn't a regular plug.
