Hi all,

thanks for viewing and replying. Heated debate here; I'm saying that at a location such as a wet bar, a pantry with a sink, or a laundry room with a sink, a receptacle is required, within 24" of the edge of that basin. I can't quite find the evidence to back up my thinking though. I do see that 210.52 (C)(1) states that all wall counter spaces need a receptacle. Is that regardless of a sink being installed? Or, was I imagining the whole thing, about needing a receptacle at these locations?

A little clarification would help tremendously!

Thanks!

You're citing 210.52(C)(1) which applies to receptacle outlets installed in kitchen and dining room countertops regardless of whether a sink is installed. There is no mention in this particular provision of the requirement for a receptacle within 24" of areas such as a wet bar, a pantry with a sink, or a laundry room with a sink.
I know your thread is not about GFCI protection within 6 feet such as at 210.8(A)(7) where it states "where receptacles are installed"....but even this language does not dictate that receptacles have to be installed.
I know of no language requiring receptacle outlets within 2 feet of the areas you mention. However if they would qualify under 210.52(A) (1 thru 3) then the 24" spacing would come into play. :)

If there is a countertop and the counter is 12" wide then a receptacle is required and don't forget the GFI requirement.

Laramie-- there is a difference between the laundry area and a kitchen in terms of required recep. Art. 210.52(C) defines for kitchen & dining countertops. It does not say for pantry or laundry. In fact, the laundry area is only required to have one receptacle-- the one for the washer. All others are not required.
Art. 210. 52 (A) does not mention laundry room.

I am not recommending only one but saying that is all that is required. The kitchen is a different animal-- yes 24" from the sink, etc

Well, so i'm confused. If the counter is 12" wide, then a receptacle is required.... but only if its in a kitchen, dining room or similar? or, ANY counter 12" wide needs to have a receptacle?

Only in the kitchen or dining room

If it were a 2 foot counter and in a room other than the Kit or DR, then it would need one to comply with 210.52(A)(2)(1)

Just my .02...

Just my .02...

Lets look at 210.8(A)(7). ...Laundry and Wet Bar GFI protection is within 6'.

If there is a Wet Bar there would more than likely be a counter around the sink, if 12" or more then a GFCI receptacle would be needed IMO. I could see the need for a blender or other electric appliance to be used at the Wet Bar.

210.8(A)(7) only says that if there is a receptacle, then that receptacle must have GFCI protection. It does not command us to put a receptacle there. However good an idea it might be, it is not a requirement. It does not matter if the wet bar has a counter surface. The requirement for receptacles to serve countertop is limited to kitchens and dining rooms. You usually don?t see wet bars, or laundry sinks for that matter, in kitchens or in dining rooms.
