cs409,
In my opinion the cord below the floor is also a violation of 400.8(5)unless permitted by Article 645.

seems like a lot of cleaning and clearing up in the NEC is in order!

Re: Receptacles Above Grid Ceiling?

I have a for instance I would like to ask.

At our site we have a very large room that can be split by a folding divider. It is normally used for large meetings and training, but occasionally, the room is used for small expos and requires power in the middle of the room.

In the past this was done by running some temporary cord thru the concealed ceiling to a 225 amp panel that is almost empty. The circuits have always been appropriately protected by circuit breakers. But, flex cord in the ceiling is not allowed, with few exceptions.

What I would like to do is put in some 50A recepts in the concealed ceiling and use spider boxes for these events. These events usually last 1 or 2 days. I am aware that the recepts do not pose an issue, and can be installed by code, but it's the flex cord on the spider boxes that are the issue. The ceiling tile would be slid over to allow the cord to pass thru.

If they are installed and the a state inspector (WA) is on site and sees them connected for an event, what will happen? Told to disconnect, fined, nothing ???

Thanks

Re: Receptacles Above Grid Ceiling?

In my opinion you can mount these receptacles above the ceiling but you will not be able to use them. No cords are to be above ceilings.

Your best bet would be to talk with the electrical inspector for your area.

They might think that your idea is fine.

Whispering hill, I'm no expert of the NEC at all, but I think you're setup would be allowable under article 590 (2005) Temporary Installations. The outlets would be allowed in the ceiling for good, and the Spiders would be allowed for up to 90 days.

Hard for me to say anything about the 2005 NEC as it is not out yet.

But the 2002 NEC does not allow rubber cords above ceilings even in article 527 Temporary Installations

Re: Receptacles Above Grid Ceiling?

The cord is out no question, the receptacle is ok if the ceiling is not a return air plentium.
