Well, he asked a quick question and I gave a quick answer but an incomplete answer.

If it is single receptacle on a dedicated circuit a 20 amp breaker can supply a 30 amp receptacle.

However if the circuit has multiple receptacles 210.23(B)(3) prohibits a 20 amp circuit from supplying 30 amp receptacles.

Thanks for the arts all. It was a hypothetical question. Had a multiple choice on my midterm asking which receptacles are allowed on a 20A circuit. 15, 20, 30, 15 & 20, or 15/20/30. I put all 3 and got it wrong. Tried asking for an art but was ignored.

This is probably the 15th time I've seen incorrect answers on tests this year alone and it really irks me. I point them out so much that my instructor just ignores me anymore (which even irks me more).

I see safe guard limitations in the NEC which is understandable but overkilling in many instances shouldn't be a violation.

Nevermind. The answer was right. But... I've still had wrong stuff on tests before.

Which of these receptacles is permitted to be connected to a 20A, 120V branch circuit that supplies several receptacles?

1.) 15A
2.) 20A
3.) 30A

a.) II only
b.) I or II or III
c.) II or III only
d.) I only
e.) I or II only

That's what I get for shooting from the hip. Thanks again.

Yea, I knew that. Off the top of my head I didn't see a problem with a 30A on there. Should have looked in the NEC.

Thanks again. Now I know. And knowing is half the battle.

I've noticed a bunch of incorrect answers on tests throughout my apprenticeship too. For the last couple of years I've been documenting them all, and I will compile all that information and write a letter when I turn out.

It's pretty ridiculous that our apprenticeship program has issues like that. I mean by and large I haven't had any other issues with the curriculum but I imagine these tests go through at least a couple of people before they are sent out to classrooms. I don't know if you are or were involved in a JATC program, but I am, and all our workbooks are filled with sample ads stating how superior our program is to the non-union sector's. That may be so, but it is still completely unacceptable to be passing out sub-standard tests and materials.

I'm fortunate that my instructors are pretty open about the whole thing. If I can show them what is wrong and PROVE it, and they agree, they will usually give me the missed points and amend their answer key. But that sort of thing shouldn't be happening.
