Receptacles in a Commerical Building's Mechanical Room

Do the receptacles located in a commercial building's mechanical room require GFCI protection? This is a small one level office building.

See NEC 210.8 (B) Other than dwelling units. Unless required by any of the subheadings of this section, I would say not required.

210.63 is limited to air conditioners/heaters/refrigeration equipment (HVAC) and electrical equipment that requires dedicated spaces.

If you want to put it in, go ahead. I usually specify it in maintenance rooms that have a floor "sink" for filling and washing out mop buckets.

Another section for GFCI requirements (depending on your code cycle) is 422.5.

For years I installed 20 amp GFCI receptacles in mechanical rooms to protect workers. These rooms often require power tools, drop lights and are used to test & repair equipment.
