Re: Recepticle location around inground pool

There is a provision 680.22 4 that allows a receptacle within 5 ft of a pools edge if due to lot restrictions.
What confuses me is that 680.22.3 which requires a receptacle to be within the 10 to 20 ft range be on a general purpose branch circuit while 5 says it`s to be gfci protected.
In this case do we consider the house gfci circuit as a general purpose branch circuit or do we line side a gfci device there. After all a circuit run for the sole purpose of providing gfci protection is hardly a general purpose circuit.
ART.100 states that a gfci ,a device intended for the protection of personnel that functions to de-energize a circuit or portion thereof within an established period of time.

Was there a particular reason for wording this section as part of a general purpose branch circuit and not as part of the gfci circuit ???

Re: Recepticle location around inground pool

Wording as such - general-purpose branch circuit, gives the installer the permission to add a pool receptacle from the nearest location, making it easier than having to install a branch circuit from the panel.
Remember that pools are installed in hotels/motels and other locations than dwellings. This permission can give some relief from trying to install a receptacle from the panel which could be a long way from the pool. Take a look at some of the older pool locations, it makes a lot of sense - what is really plugged into those type of receptacles.

Re: Recepticle location around inground pool

So basically we can jostle a wp recep from a location and move it 3 ft to make code, for 10 - 20 ft spacing rule rather than add a recep 4 ft from present location and use:code says it has to be there ruling.
The reason I ask is that we do a tremendous amount of tract homes and as per code there is always a wp in the rear,as a company rule where there is a disc A/C we add a wp to service the unit again code,10 - 20 ft rule another receptacle when a pool is added again code .When placed right we can save 2 wp receptacles/home and still be within code, with the cost of 2 in use covers ,2 devices,2 boxes and labor. To be able to shave that much dead skin off that ball of wax adds up over 12 months.
The best is nobody can squawk because of those sweet few words....It has to be there to meet code :D
