recessed can in return air

Has anyone come across the situation where a recessesd can (IC rated) is installed in between the TJI's in a basement where the cavity is panned off for a cold air return? Is there anything that prohibits this type of installation? Thanks for your replies in advance.
 
The recessed can would have to be listed for the use in "other space used for enviromental air". Take a look at 300.22(C)(2).

I did a lot of research on this subject recently, and the standard IC rated recessed fixture meets the requirements of 300.22(C)(2). The only jurisdiction in the country that required these fixtures to be specifically 'plenum rated' WAS the City of Chicago. They recently repealed this requirement as unnecessary.

The special listing requirement would be only if the enclosure for the fixture is not metallic.

Thanks for the info, I haven't spent much time looking at the listing of recessed cans in regards to 300.22(C)(2).

Chris, I had never worried about it before I came to Santa Clarita's Building Department. One of the plan checkers had been requiring that the fixtures be plenum rated, and I had to question it, so that meant that I had to do the research........
It turns out that this was not a valid code call and the heavy sigh of relief from the designers in this area could be heard for miles.......

There were only two manufacturer's, both in the Chicago area, that even offered "plenum rated" recessed fixtures.

"Were" being the key word here, with the requirement repealed. :smile:
 
(2) Equipment. Electrical equipment with a metal enclosure,
or with a nonmetallic enclosure listed for the use and having
adequate fire-resistant and low-smoke-producing characteristics,
and associated wiring material suitable for the ambient
temperature shall be permitted to be installed in such other
space unless prohibited elsewhere in this Code.

An all metal recess can.....nah I have no problem with it....

lol....yeah if it was in Chicago has to be a union thing...( opps..did I say that )
