Recessed lights and trims

Is there a code article that requires a recessed light to have a trim. I came in to do work at a residence that had just finished a basement renovation. It had been given a final electrical sticker yet there were obvious violations present. In reviewing items with the homeowner, I pointed out that no trims existed in cans installed in an unfinished area. Logic tells me that a recessed fixture is lamped based on the trim installed and the rating given to the assembly with that trim. But I cannot find any article to quote. Any suggestions?

Check out NEC 2008 - 100.3(b) It's design and listing is all we have to go by. Unless it we're in a closet or shower, for obvious reasons.

I think the problem is that the bulbs sizes are based on the trim that is used. Without the trim there is no basis for what size bulb to allow.

Now, I did a commercial job years ago where they had a ceiling grid that just stopped in an odd pattern- no tile- etc. You could see up above. I installed recessed cans without trims but technically I am not sure it would be allowed. Personally I don't think you would have an issue with it but.....
