Recessed Lights

I will say I see there reasoning but still dumb. Came about an old -DXH I think it’s called Leviton smart system had a receiver up in the can and they had a box mounted near it. Was trying to find it for an hour- no attic access- I thought there not dumb enough to put it up that high.
I would still do it if that’s my only optikn

There are a total of three recessed, and there are two that are technically over the cu in according to the sticker on the housing. I’m not saying I’ll do this, but would this work if the homeowner is open to surface mounted fixtures? There are currently 5” holes from the old recessed lights on a thick wooden ceiling. If I put a piece of 2x4 across part of the opening I could use a round smart box and mount a surface mounted light. Do they make a low profile surface mounted light that would look similar to a recessed trim? If I was to do something like this I wouldn’t have to be concerned with box fill, burying junction boxes, etc.

In our upstairs bathroom we have recessed lights. There are 8 LED of them - it is quite a big room with bath tun, shower, sink, bidet and cludgie, .
The lighting is on a string so electrical switches are in the roof.
