recession, depression, future of the industry, meaning of life

Anyone who says we are not headed into a recession has their head in the sand. Whether or not you can make a living or keep your business running is another matter. The fact is gas is going up, cost of goods is going up(inflation), house prices are dropping, wages are not going up in proportion. Spin it how you want but the US is heading into somewhat less than stellar economic times. Doesn't mean a electrician still can't make a living though. Big commercial seems to be doing pretty good in my area right now.

... I average two-three calls a day for jobs and am looking at about 12k/month right now just from the work I have scheduled through May and June. ...SIGNED

Is this Gross or Net?

I suggest staying with your current job to help bring in steady pay. You will need a steady check coming in if things slow down. You can continue to do the work scheduled. Build slowly, Grow slowly.

Drove by the gravel pit today...

Drove by the gravel pit today...

I saw 30 cement trucks lined up side by side, parked.

I've never seen that before... and its a daily trip.

No concrete flowing today means no installs next month.

Lately I haven't seen hardly any concrete pumpers or trucks on the road.

Where might this be?

Who exactly is this "Media" and how do they "blow it out of proportion"?

In this context, the "media" are news "productions" that depend on advertizment income and puts more emphasis on quantity of viewers instead of quality of news or facts.

Ever hear the season's first snow forecast?

This figure is from definite scheduled jobs, I have several people who are trying to work me into their schedule. I am accustomed to making it on 5k/month net from my other job. I work alone 90% of the time since I have 6 arms and I am 9 feet tall. Well, the last part may have been exaggerated just a bit but I can usually manage. I am working about 80 hours a week right now between the steady job and my contracting jobs.

Economics of the 2008 Code

Economics of the 2008 Code

The timing for the sweeping changes in the Code was as bad as it could have been, considering our economy. This was especially evident on an old home that caught fire and had to be entirely rewired. The owner holds 3 jobs making $11 an hour and has no insurance. I had no choice but to put in $60 AFCI breakers, tamper resistant receptacles at $ 1.29 each, weather resistant GFCI's at $16 each etc. If anyone wanted to drive the final nail into the Housing coffin this was it.

I believe that money doesnt disappear, It just shifts from one place to another. The key is to follow that shift-Unless it means having to move to China

Well around here the guys who had all their eggs in one production builders basket are in trouble. I am going to a liquidation auction for an EC who was in business 41 years. My sales are up 54% over last year same time.

Ive always been told flexibility is key- Diversity keeps the work coming and more importantly keeps the guys happy. I didnt get into this trade to go to the same place everyday. One day we're wiring a house, next day installing a WIFI network, next day a CNG facility, etc. Its worked so far, hope it keeps up.

I plan to retire in 20 years and will have been in business 26 years but that was not the case with the guys in trouble here. the failure of the business is the reason for the end.
