I'm trying to find the specific code that requires fire alarm j-boxes to be red in color. I could not find anything in the NFPA 72 that spelled it out directly. The NEC article 760.10 states: "Fire alarm circuits shall be identified at terminal and junction locations, in a manner that will prevent unintentional interference with the signaling circuit during testing and servicing."(Direct quote from the 2002 NEC)

A contractor working in our area asked for the specific code that covers this requirement since he feels that he does not have to color his j-boxes red.

Does anyone know the chapter or code that requires this? Our AHJ does not have any amendments that require it, but it is and has been a common practice for years and several companies now make boxes, conduit and fittings that are colored red and all equipment back boxes and covers come red from the factory.

It is not an NEC requirement.

It has become pretty much an industry practice and many specs require it.

We usually will do red boxes, covers, connectors and couplings.

One job spec required red pipe but that is available prepainted.

In many areas I work fire alarm terminal boxes must be red, clearly labeled with big letters and have a lockable hinged cover door. That is not job spec that is the FDs that inspect the work.
