Red Murray breaker

I have a 200a red Murray or Crouse Hinds main circuit breaker that I need to shut off to relocate a panel. I seem to recall hearing somtimes when you shut them off it's nearly imposible to turn back on. Some kind of manufacturer defect or something. It's an early eighties model I would guess. Anybody ever run into this?

I wouldn't worry about it for a few reasons. 1) I've never heard that before. 2) They're cheap. 3) The Siemens flat face black main is a direct replacement.

I've never had one stick off but I replace a few every summer due to burned connections at the bus.

The black Siemans are a replacement but the conductors land a little differently.

That's another concern. If the breaker does pooch on me this jobsite (hunting camp) is good two hours from a supply house. Also with the fact that the Siemans lands different, the conductors might be a couple inches short. (story of my life )Then I'm running new conductors etc....I guess I'll bring everything thinking worst case scenario.

Yes, and many of those panels have guts that can be flipped, bringing undamaged lugs to the top.

Sometimes it is burned to bad to use. In one case there was available space so I moved the breaker down to the next clean spot. Sometimes I clean it up with a wire wheel and schedule a service change.

That's usually the route I take. Get things patched up as much as possible, make it clear that it's a temp fix that might not even last a day, and schedule the real work. Naturally, this is all noted on the work order or invoice too, for posterity. Certainly, some of this patch work never gets the real repair done.
