Existing two family home with two service drops one on right side and one on left side of the house I did a service upgrade on one side and inspector now said that 230.2 applies and it's one side or the other. I think it would be grandfathered.

Re: red sticker

if this 2 family is a side by side with a firewall that separates the 2 buildings it would
be considered 2 separate buildings, and a drop to each would be permitted.

Re: red sticker

I cant find any reference in the code that states that ALL existing services on property have to be upgraded. When it was build it was OK. I'm not asking for another lateral I already have one. The code book doesn't say it has to be removed. Or it can't be used.

Re: red sticker

Hiram,

230.2 essentially says, as a result of your new work, the new larger service you've installed, that the installation has to be done in such a way that the occupancy has one service drop to it.

So, since no work is being done to the other service, the new one has to run over to the PoCo drop supplying the unimproved service.

This can be a headache to work out, contractually, if the two halves of the occupancy are under different ownership (like if they are condominiums, or worse yet, owned together by two family members that are at odds with each other - did that job once).

Re: red sticker

230.40 Exception #1 does conflict to some extent with 230.72. This is not the only utter cretinism in NEC.

Your best bet is to put in a second 200 amp meter and run underground around to the other side ot the house.

OR, sledge a hole in the companion wall and prove that it is a firewall per Code when the house was built.
