If WWIII were here and we had materials shortages you think NEC would make any changes today because of it? I think not. We would still have expanded AFCI requirements though.

Pretty sure. If it used to be code compliant you can keep it. If there is a hidden clause I'm not aware of Rick Napier will chime in, I'm sure.

He is right in NJ even if you move the range 250.140 would still apply. NJ has the rehab code for existing structures classifying the work as 6.4 Repair, 6.5 Renovation, 6.6 Alteration or 6.7 Reconstruction and in (e)2v of each of these sections NEC 250.140 is listed so even if you move the existing installation 250.140 would apply and three wire would be alowed.
