Remote lighting ballast

I have a 120 volt lighting ballast that is remotely located from one of the bulbs. It hums loudly. The secondary wires are lengthened ( about 6' ) with # 12 stranded and run in emt to the second T12 bulb. The voltage and bulbs match the ballast. There is another identical set-up that hums as well. I'm thinking the stranded wire in the emt is the problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Pat.

What is the ballast mounted on?

Hi, Thanks for your reply. The ballast is in a fixture mounted to wood rafters. The second bulb is remotely mounted in another fixture as previously described.
