viper makes one that is pretty good.... alarm with remote start.
i use it on my work van.... set the controls for full cool in the
summer, and start it 10 minutes before you leave.

viper, clifford... instead of finding an alarm, get a good installer,
and let him earn his $300 for spending half a day making it work.
nobody that i know makes a "plug in"... you are gonna have to
do some cutting..... :D

having my diesel van done was about $650..... but then i added
remote vehicle location, and a whole passel of other stuff, and
added a zero to that number.... but now it's got a two horsepower
stereo as well.... (1,600 watts) and a 12" alpine sub that can
knock loose stucco off the neighbors house, and drive termites
out of the framing as well.... it was a necessary work expense.
trust me.

HAHA I hear that! It isnt my work vehicle, but my suburban has a $11k stereo in it, it isnt done yet but when its all done it will have almost 4000 watts rms power, surround sound, dvd player, 3 subs, 6 mid/high speakers, 4 amps, 4 [1 farad] caps, dedicated battery, and probably a SNES

I love my truck

I have a Viper with remote start too. Great investment especially here in the Northeast where winter months can provide a nice layer of ice/frost on the windows in the morning. I installed mine myself. A job that I wouldn't recommend. By the time you find all of the necessary wires that need to be connected you'll have spent countless hours of wasted time lying on your back looking under the dashboard. I would recommend that you leave the job to the pro's.

Ahh yes. Uncertain how much I have invested in mine... cause I haven't kept a running total on the time I have put into customizing ;) When the current stage of enhancements are complete I'll be approaching 10 kWrms... in my pleasure ride.

The inside photo was taken with the mid-row seats removed and the bench seat powered to the flat position. Close examination reveals the trim out isn't finished around the rear doors. FWIW, I have the sub amp rigged to retract under the bench seat when powered to the upright position.

Remote starter is on the list of things yet to do

As for my work ride, it already has a remote starter and for the sound system just has four 10's and a 3-way, 6.5" component set, pumping about 1800 Wrms maxed out... plenty enough for a compact car

BTW, for donselectric, Bulldog Security sells T-harnesses to make installations easier (but doesn't cover 100% of the connections). Unfortunately their website does not show a t-harness available for an '08 Express. Additionally, you'll want to look into bypassing the theft-deterrent transponder (AFAIK when activated it kills fuel to the engine) if you plan on doing the install yourself. While remote starters are fairly simple in their basic connections, bypassing the transponder adds a bit more complexity to the install.

My coworker is a remote start guru. He has worked on vehicle electronics most of his life, and is the goto guy for the new car dealers around here that he used to work for. Does them on the side, makes good money.

The dealers don't want to retain the people who can do this cost-effectively (read: quickly, correctly, and without troubles). They add $150 to his price to them, and charge the customer accordingly. He can do most vehicles in less than one hour. Complicated ones might take him 2-3 hrs. For unfamiliar ones, the remote start mfg has a website that details one any particular model (need a password).

BUT, there are several makes and models that he refuses to do, like some VW Jettas and some other foreign models that require him to screw with some pricey parts like computer modules - bend or break a pin while inserting/removing the module and you just bought a $1k module.

Anyway, many new cars have keys that have a chip or transponder in them. If yours does and your vehicle requires one to start, you will need a spare one to install with the remote start. For my Lincoln Navigator, I was able to get a bad cut one from the Ford dealer that they were going to throw away, for $12 (new one is $80). This worked for me because you didn't have to turn the key to program it to the vehicle, you just had to insert it into the ignition. Yours might be different.

Let a pro do it, and talk to them before you buy.

I put a Bulldog in my Jeep. Got the wife a Tahoe and paid a pro to do it. Not sure of the system he used, but no extra remote needed. Hit the lock button twice on the factory remote and she starts up. Spent $100.00 and about 4 hours doing the Jeep. Spent about $300.00 on the Tahoe. Dropped it off and picked it up the same day.

I here that Bulldog has a pretty good self install system. They also have the connectors for plug and play.

I had Car Toys install a Clifford for me and I love it. I had the alarm, glass breakage and remote start oh...and keyless entry! Around $700

denial is *so* ugly.... admit it, you know how much......:D

i stopped by my installer one day to say hi, and he said....
"you gotta come look at this...."

there was a HMMVEE H1 owned by the son of a mortgage banker
down in the harbor (when mortgage bankers had money:D) and the
little muppet (he was 16 and it was his first car) had installed
everything imaginable. macintosh amps, a wall of subs, a disco ball
with lasers, #4/0 amp power cables, two 200 amp alternators,
words cannot describe it.

number can. his multimedia extravaganza at that point had cost
$125,000, not counting the cost of a H1. it can get pretty twisted
on the left coast.

I had a Viper 550? put on a new van in 1998 and never had a single problem with it. Remote start, alarm, automatic door locks. Best thing I ever bought for a van. I didn't know if they were still in business, my remotes are superglued together from years of being mashed in my pant's pockets.
