Would this involve replacing the entire section or the switch within the section?

I wonder why? With most breakers of that size you would be able to set the long time trip at 2500 amps.

The steel frame could remain but you need new internal bussing to the new breaker.
This is a common operation for many service shops.

You often need one shut down in order to take proper measurements and then a second longer outage for the actual work.
Depending on the age and manufacturer of the equipment a new section could be built at the factory and then be installed in one outage.

We discussed that with schneider electric and they provide us with the actual submittal, the existing drawings didn’t show the correct size. The main bus is rated for 3000A but the switch section is only rated for 1200Amp. That is why we need to change the section.
