Required Disconnects

For those who are not familiar with a mini-split AC system, it is a system consisting of a compressor with a controller located on the exterior of the building and a fan normally on the inside of the building. The wiring from the controller to the inside unit is normally a 4 conductor cord with two low voltage and either a 240 volt or 120 volt fan circuit. This multi-conductor cable is installed and teminated by the AC contractor as part of the assembly. Our Authority has now started requiring an indoor disconnect for these system. The problem is the space limitations on the indoor units do not allow for the extra wiring required to install the disconnect. I referenced article 430.102 stating that the disconnect has to be mounted within site of the controller and be capable of being locked in the open position. Has anyone had this problem or is this just confined to our area?

Typically, all you need is a motor rated switch mounted next to the unit.
I often see them cord and plug connected even though they are not listed for cord connection.
