Required GFCI

My daughter recently purchased a german made washer. When it arrived it was wired for 240V. I contacted the manufacturer's ttechnical support and asked how it could be converted to 120V. Their reply was that it had to be supplied with 240V even though the installation book stated that it was wired for 120V, 208V and 240V. If the wiring is changed the warranty would be voided. How can this unit be used and conform to the code requiring that an outlet within 6' of water is required to be GFCI protected?

240 volt outlets can be GFCI protected with a two pole GFCI breaker.

That aside, the GFCI requirements in a laundry room only apply to 120 volt 15 and 20 amp circuits.

My understanding is that outlets designated for a single purpose need not be GFCI. Example garbage disposal, dish washer, dryer.

fixnsparks, be sure to review 210.8 to see when you can apply the concept you describe.

You're only allowed to install a single receptacle (in lieu of GFCI) where you see exceptions. For example, that's not the case outdoors.
