I want answer to this one myself.To my understanding ,nothing is required.But don't take that to the bank yet ,it might bounce

This issue is not addressed in the NEC, it is a building code issue.

I would check with the local building department to see what the building code requires.

You bet, but I am just on the bottom rung of a very long ladder.:D

I am a combination inspector so I inspect all aspects of construction. We are under the IBC in Utah. Here is a quote from the IBC

1006.1 Illumination required. The means of egress, including the exit discharge, shall be illuminated at all times the building space served by the means of egress is occupied.
