Requirements for wire nuts inside rooftop junction box

Are all wire nuts in a roof j-box required to be waterpoof? Trying to find a code section specifically referencing this but no luck so far.

The wet location connectors are required for enclosures or raceways installed underground.

300.50(B) Wet Locations.
The interior of enclosures or raceways installed underground shall be considered to be a wet location. Insulated conductors and cables installed in these enclosures or raceways in underground installations shall be listed for use in wet locations and shall comply with 310.10(C). Any connections or splices in an underground installation shall be approved for wet locations.

300.9 applies to raceways but not enclosures. 300.5(B) applies to enclosures but only underground. So no, rooftop boxes are not determined by code to be wet locations AFAIK.

That said, I strongly second the advice in the last two posts.
 
I worked at a large slaughterhouse & a candy plant that had nightly high pressure wash downs so water intrusion was a problem. We always used reliable Ideal brand wire nuts and had the wire opening end facing down along with several wraps of quality black tape down an inch onto insulation. We had a motor shop rewind motors & provide only three leads ( 3 phase ) and expoxy the motor leads entering pecker head. Opened a few if these motors up and the pecker head was filled with water but did not ground out. After we did this on a tank with the 20 HP agitator motor mounted at bottom of the tank went from replacing motors every 6 months to 4 or 5 years.

"slaughterhouse & a candy plant" Hopefully these were not the same location. Offal candy just doesn't sound like a winner at halloween.

No they were a few miles apart. Ate good at the candy plant. Our shop always had a box of salted cashews, peanuts, raisins, & assorted candy. A few guys had rice crispies, powdered milk & sugar for a free breakfast. Every couple of months on night shift would send an apprentice out to get a few containers of ice cream and would make Sundays with company cherries, butterscotch, Carmel and chocolate toppings.

Me third. Yep, wire nuts like little umbrellas and 1 or 2 weep holes.

(Outdoor wire nuts cannot hurt and be ready for some rare inspectors to ask for them. )
