I am inspecting the attic of single family homes. I have noticed that there are roof vent fans installed. They have a line voltage thermostats for operation. There is no way to get to these motors or t-stats to inspect for proper installation. I have read about accessibility. My chief inspector says that there is no way to enforce a safe permanent access to this equipment. Is he right?

Sometimes I change these motors from the roof if I have no attic access. Some builders use this to satisfy the requirements.

IMHO I dont know that the NEC would require an accessible working platform. However accessibility is required (article 100) but the access can be by portable means. You might also investigate article 430 for motor disconnects... there does have to be a disconnecting means for the motor.

I`ve lost count of the # of remote mulii speed range hood blowers that I have hooked up in spaces above kitchens that have no access what so ever.Violation ,yes passed yes .Now if the inspector saw an access framed like for drver booster they required a disconnect switch.Same inspector same inspection walked right by the remote blower in scissor trusses.

Thanks for the info on the range hood vents. I have yet to see one but I will be on the look-out.
