Residential Electrical Panel Placement

I have several electrician friends who hate that kind of placement because it is hazardous if they have to work on it, someone could open the door from the other side while they are working. One friend actually charges extra if the work is being performed under hazardous conditions, he will actually take the door off of the hinges to work if needed.

That's the most ridiculous thing I ever heard!

{Hbiss }That's the most ridiculous thing I ever heard!
Me too
I've worked on hundreds in that location. The door doesn't need a lock as your boots keep any body from hitting your arm upon opening the door.
In a small house, no garage, no basement. That is where every one installed panels for many many years.
That's why an inspector that has actually been an electrician is important...

Ditto that. Remove the door? Anyone ever heard of a 50 cent wooden wedge?
You guys can put me your "most ridiculous" list.
I remove the door when ever I seen necessary. It makes my job more pleasant.(more elbow room)
And anybody else who needs to access the can get by or see me there.
I know those hinge pins can sure be tricky.;)

Really, that's the most ridiculous thing you've ever heard? Wow, must be nice. I thought it was a bit of an unnecessary precaution when I first heard it, but then two other electricians agreed. But the most ridiculous? Doesn't even make my top 100.

It would be nice if I had worked in every single trade that I am asked to inspect. I've done almost all of them, electrical work is the only trade I haven't done. If we were a big city we would have trade specific inspectors. We don't, we just have me. At least I take the time to learn, and I am always open minded. I recognize that when I show up on a job usually the people doing the work know a lot more than I do. Sorry to disappoint you. It really amazes me how jaded many of you are about inspectors. I get it, I've met some real jerks, but that's life man. There are real jerks in every trade, every street corner, and every forum.
