Surface mounting is not required in Wisconsin.
Fittings are required.


This shows how important it is to read your local codes.
From an outsiders view point, I believe residential installations may have the biggest number of NEC 'local variances'.

For sure, here in Mass we have about 60-70 amendments.

It was because of those local changes I had prefaced my post with this.:)

However there is a difference between inspectors allowing something and true amendments.

As you state it is important to know the local rules.
